Von Mao zu Techno
Neues unabhängiges chinesisches Filmschaffen

Aus Anlass der Ausstellung «Mahjong – Chinesische Gegenwartskunst aus der Sammlung Sigg», die bis Oktober im Kunstmuseum zu sehen ist, hat das Kino Kunstmuseum eine Reihe mit Filmen aus China zusammengestellt. Die Werke dieser Filmemacherinnen und Filmemacher bieten Einblick in das vielfältige jüngste Filmschaffen der Volksrepublik und zeichnen ein beeindruckendes Bild einer Gesellschaft im Umbruch. Einige der neueren Spielfilme sind als exklusive Schweizer Premieren zu sehen, so zum Beispiel The World von Jia Zhangke oder etwa Two Great Sheep von Liu Hao, der seinen Film persönlich vorstellen und an der Podiumsdiskussion über das gegenwärtige chinesische Filmschaffen zwischen Kunst und Kommerz teilnehmen wird. Auffallend in den Werken von Jia, Liu und ihren KollegInnen ist ihr präziser und schonungsloser Blick auf die chinesische Gegenwart. Dies zeichnet auch die zahlreichen Dokumentarfilme aus, die einen besonderen Schwerpunkt dieser Filmreihe bilden und zum Teil erstmals in der Schweiz zu sehen sind. Werke wie der monumentale West of the Tracks von Wang Bing über die Auswirkungen des Zerfalls des einst grössten industriellen Zentrums Chinas, das ergreifende Porträt von jugendlichen Outlaws von Du Haibin in Along the Railway oder von Wanderarbeiterinnen aus Sichuan der Regisseurin Ning Ying in Railroad of Hope ergeben eine einzigartige Bestandesaufnahme der gegenwärtigen sozialen Umbrüche, mit welchen sich Millionen von Chinesinnen und Chinesen täglich auseinander setzen müssen. Sie zeugen einerseits von der neuen, dank digitaler Videokamera erlangten Freiheit und Mobilität der zumeist jungen Filmemacherinnen und Filmemacher, anderseits von ihrem grossen Engagement und ihrer unermüdlichen Ausdauer in einem nach wie vor schwierigen filmpolitischen Umfeld. Bei all diesen Filmschaffenden findet sich auch in formaler Hinsicht eine spürbare Lust, sich von ihren Vorgängern abzuheben. Deren berühmteste Vertreter Zhang Yimou und Chen Kaige hatten mit ihren Werken Ende der achtziger und Anfang der neunziger Jahre zahlreiche Auszeichnungen gewonnen und dem chinesischen Kino zu Ansehen und Anerkennung auf dem internationalen Parkett verholfen. Sie haben sich inzwischen auch im Westen populären und kommerziell erträglicheren Genres zugewandt. Umso schöner, dass hier nochmals einige ihrer früheren Werke zu sehen sind, die ihren Ruhm zu Recht begründeten und Zeugnis ihres aussergewöhnlichen Könnens ablegen. Nathalie Bao-Götsch

Chinesische Kurz- und Experimentalfilme

Nach der Geburt der chinesischen Medienbewegung 1997 stürzten sich viele Chinesinnen und Chinesen innerhalb kurzer Zeit in die Welt der Computer. Der Umgang mit E-mail war schnell gelernt und Computer waren rasch umkonfiguriert. Es wurde experimentiert, programmiert, und schon bald war der PC ein gängiges Kunstmedium. Die Bewegung setzte sich weniger mit flachen und statischen Formen auseinander, sondern nutzte die enormen Möglichkeiten als Ausdrucksmittel. In diesem dynamischen Umfeld, das heute einen grossen Einfluss auf die Kunstschaffenden hat, entstand eine chaotische, aber sehr stimulierende und kreative Gruppe von zeitgenössischen KünstlerInnen. Das Kino Kunstmuseum zeigt Werke von bedeutenden ‹New Media›-KünstlerInnen aus China.

Chinesische Filme aus der Sammlung Sigg

Die Video-Sammlung von Uli und Rita Sigg besteht aus Bändern zu Installationen und aus autonomen Arbeiten. Von letzteren zeigen wir eine kleine Auswahl, die sich mit aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Problemen in China auseinander setzt: verschiedene Animationsfilme von Zhou Xiaohu, dem Autor der grossen Militärparade in der Treppenhalle des Kunstmuseums. Seine Werke sind an den wichtigsten Videofestivals im Westen bereits gezeigt und ausgezeichnet worden.
Vom zweifachen Documenta-Teilnehmer Wang Jianwei wird die Videoarbeit Living Elsewhere (1999) präsentiert, die dokumentarischen Charakter besitzt: Vier Bauern ‹squatten› am Rande der Stadt Chengdu, Sichuan, unvollendete Villen und beginnen in dieser Isolation ein neues Leben.
Die junge Künstlerin Cao Fei aus Kanton hat zusammen mit Ou Ning den Videofilm San Yuan Li gedreht. Er handelt von der allgemeinen Verstädterung, der parallelen Entwicklung des Dorfcharakters in einer Grossstadt und dem neuen Verhalten von Jugendlichen in diesem Kontext.

Electromediascope Experimental Film, Video and New Media Series
Four Chinese Artists' Works in September at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

FilmKansas City, Mo. - infoZine - Explore the daily life of Chinese cities and people navigating the cultural dynamics between state politics and socioeconomic change in the beautiful narrative films and video documents of performances and installations in this fall's Electromediascope film, video and new-media series Sept. 16, 23 and 30 at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

Screenings will return to the usual time and place, 7 p.m. Fridays in Atkins Auditorium on the ground floor of the Nelson-Atkins Building. Part of Ford Free Fridays, made possible by Ford Motor Company Fund, the programs are free, and no tickets are required.

The Electromediascope program is funded through the generosity of Rheta A. Sosland.

This fall's three-part series is entitled Traveling Outside and Within: Four Contemporary Chinese Artists. Programs this season include film and video works by four artists from two major ports on China's Pacific Rim: Shanghai, the largest and most prosperous city on the mainland, and Guangzhou, known formerly in the West as Canton.

The Electromediascope program is concurrent with the free exhibition Tide of Chaos, Fervor Within: Chinese Painters of the 17th Century Respond to Dynastic Upheaval. The cream of the Nelson-Atkins' world-famous masterpieces of Chinese art is on view in the form of 56 paintings - handscrolls, hanging scrolls and album leaves - installed in the recently reopened Gallery 224. The painting exhibition also explores Chinese aesthetics in a way relevant to several of the works presented in the Electromediascope season.

Though referencing traditional Chinese aesthetics and intended primarily for Chinese audiences, works in this fall's three-part film, video and new-media series are relevant- without being exotic - to an international audience, said Patrick Clancy, Chair of the Photography and New Media Department at the Kansas City Art Institute. Clancy is co-curator of Electromediascope with Kansas City-based visual artist Gwen Widmer.

"Most people know the struggles and conflicts," Clancy said, "between personal desires and allegiance to family responsibilities, the experience of nature in sublime settings and living in modern urban centers, and the benefits of group dynamics compared with the disjointed monotony of conformity in the speeded-up life of contemporary global culture."

The Department of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Nelson-Atkins provides administrative support for Electromediascope.
