CHINA: SEEN by CHINESE CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS
A Global Overview From 1989 to the present
An exhibition and a book by Daniela Palazzoli

China: SEEN by CONTEMPORARY CHINESE ARTISTS : the book and the show, conceived and curated by Daniela Palazzoli, offer a concise and synthetical overview of its contemporary artists, trends, and movements, which have developed after Tienanmen Square events in 1989. Through the more than one hundred relevant works by fifty artists, the book and the show tell us the fascinating story of how some creative courageous and selfdirected individuals – the artists – understood, felt and reacted to the breathtaking events which took, and are still taking place, in their country. This story, conceived according to the Museum standards of an historical overview, does not distinguish so much among a variety of languages: painting, sculpture, photography, performance, body art, cinema, video and installation art today are often chosen and practised by the same artist according to his or her communication needs. Every artist is generally represented in the show by two outstanding historically important works, while in the book there can be more significant documentation. Within the historical partition influenced also by political and ideological choices – the early nineties, the passage from communism to consumerism, the advent of mass media and of marketing strategies, the new urban landscape in megalopolis style-, the works of contemporary Chinese artists show an extraordinary creative power and originality. Wheter they develop a more conceptual or a more figurative and realistic approach, their way of transforming ideas and feelings into art gets in touch with us in a very direct and authentic way. Their strategies, attitudes and ideas are extremely various and innovative. All of them share two extraordinary features: they are strongly inspired by everyday life. They are direct and intense. Their ways of sharing with us their original creations is both linguistically mature and authentic.

Among the artists: Ai Weiwei, Bai Yluo, Fang Lijun, Gu Wenda, Hai Bo, Huang Yan, Hong Hao, Li Dafang, Lin Tianmiao, Li Songsong, Liu Wei, Lu Hao, Ma Liuming, Qui Zhijie, Shao Yinong & Muchen, Sui Jianguo, Wang Guangyi, Wang Qingsong, Yang Fudong, Yang Zhengzhong, Xue Song, Xu Yihui, Zeng Fanzhi, Zhang Dali, Zhang Xiaogang, Zhao Bandi, Zheng Hao, Zhou Tiehai, Zhu Ming.
